Psychoanalysis/ Pshychotherapy
Psychotherapy and psychoanalysis can transform your life, but it takes time, ongoing self-reflection and commitment. I offer a supportive approach based on the principles of psychodynamic therapy, active listening, thoughtful questions, and a genuine commitment to your well-being. I ask questions, provide insight and interpretations along the way to enable analytic work.
What is my Psychoanalytic Orientation?
My psychoanalytic orientation is inspired by the teachings of the late Parisian psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan (1901-1981). Unlike psychoanalysts who embrace a diagnostic approach to analysis, the Lacan School of Psychoanalysis prioritizes questions of desire. This orientation to clinical work is not about normalization, but interpreting and valuing your own unique approach to life. The objective of Lacanian psychoanalysis is to learn from your symptom (relevant to desire, pain, and trauma). I make room for your unconscious to speak. This may involve free association and dream analysis if you choose.
I offer psychotherapy to those interested in meeting weekly, and psychoanalysis to those interested in meeting more regularly for deep analytic work. I also offer couple therapy. My sessions are by phone or video-call. You may contact me to set up an Initial Consultation at Sheilalcavanagh@gmail.com
