Artist Bio.
Sheila Cavanagh lives in Toronto, but spends a lot of time in Australia. As a psychoanalyst and artist, Cavanagh brings her interest in nature and the human psyche to her abstract paintings, mosaics, and wall sculptures. She choreographs her own artistic explorations alongside a community of artists at the Akin Collective in Toronto. Using brightly colored fragments of water worn building materials, she has developed a technique called Sherd Sculpturing. The process is inspired by Hermann Rorschach’s (188-1922) inkblots which he made to interpret unconscious processes.
Cavanagh’s sherd sculpture titled “Raining Gems” was accepted into the 2025 Annual Juried Exhibition at the Art Gallery of Mississauga. In the same year, Cavanagh exhibited two sherd sculptures made of beach-worn materials at the Propeller Gallery. Her current work is made of pottery sherds, composite materials, glass, bricks, etc., collected from the shores of Lake Ontario in Tommy Thompson Park (Leslie Spit).
